“It's another day in the middle of a grueling 96 game season. Inside the Air Hogs club house in the back right corner sleeps Derek Nicholson, his head resting against the back of his immaculate locker, a locker like no other. His is spotless. Clothes are neatly arranged, the surface is wiped down with a cleaner, and everything is organized symmetrically. After all Nicholson is a peculiarly clean man, this is a man who owned a cleaning service called OCD Cleaning.
At 6 feet, 230 pounds he is a semi truck of a man. That much is apparent when you shake his hand. Nicholson, 32 is the American Association of Independent Baseballs' journeyman, a guy who has played for so many teams, and been around for so long that even Kenny Lofton is envious of him. "I play baseball because I love the game," said Nicholson the outfielder and designated hitter for the Air Hogs. "I definitely don't play for the money, especially in this league." Which is true. Instead of taking a desk job making $40,000 a year, Nicholson gave that up, to play baseball year-around, making the average salary of a crossing guard working the summer shift. With a big league smile, there is just something about Nicholson that attracts people to him. He has a larger than life personality and is the kind of guy you would want to take out your daughter, but at the same time a guy who will always have your back. (by: Lotis Butchko)
